  • 7th Graders Attend National Junior Honor Society State Summit

    7th Graders Attend National Junior Honor Society State Summit

    Four Grade 7 students accompanied Principal Hanson to the National Junior Honor Society’s (NJHS) State Summit in San Diego.

    The State Summits are one-day programs that allow National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society members to participate in hands-on experiential leadership exercises.

    Principal Annette says, “The kids were amazing, and they learned a lot. I hope they take their new knowledge and use it to become change-makers.” The 7th-graders interacted with many other students and academic presenters, but also found time to visit the San Diego Zoo and the beach.  

    This year’s NHS/NJHS state-based issues included Global Citizenship, Improving Learning Environments and “Operation: Conservation” (focused on strategizing conservation efforts.)

    YCIS Teacher honored by ANCCS

    At a recent ceremony commemorating the 2,566th birthday anniversary of Confucius, beloved YCIS art and kinder Chinese teacher Samantha Yang was honored by the Association of Northern California Chinese Schools (ANCCS). Yang Lao Shi was awarded for excellence in teaching alongside sixty teachers. 
     
    After two weeks of practice, YCIS students participated in the Confucius Ceremony with a skillful recital of "The Rules for Students" (a classic for character education in ancient China).
     
    Congratulations Yang Lao Shi, for your hard work and dedication to your profession and our children! Great job on the recital to our participating students!

    Math Olympiad Team Takes Tops Honors

    YCIS Silicon Valley’s Math Olympiad Club hosted its 2nd Annual Math Olympiad contest on Saturday, May 14. About 100 students from ten regional private and public school Math Olympiad teams participated. Six students in Grades 2 through 6 represented YCIS. Three YCIS students placed in the individual competition earning 4th, 7th and honorable mention awards while the YCIS team took top honors with 1st place in the team competition for the second year in a row.

    Earth Day Rain Can't Dampen Science Day Fun

    It rained, it poured, but Science Day fun carried on. While much-needed rain blessed draught-suffering Northern California on Earth Day, YCIS Silicon Valley students enjoyed a day of hands-on science learning. Rotating through workshops led by parents and other scientists, the children explored a wide range of scientific concepts. From electrical circuitry to magnets, wind tunnels to molecules, gardening to shake-n-eat science, there was an activity for every type of future scientist.
